Adam-GlickTexas Homeowners: Wanna Get Paid to Help the Grid? Let’s Talk Octopus VPP + Enphase Battery Storage

By Adam Glick, Solar Sherpa, NATiVE Solar

Updated October 16, 2026: this post originally described Octopus Energy’s GridBoost program as an Enphase program and misstated how Intelligent Octopus pays. We’ve corrected both below, using the program terms Octopus’s hardware partners publish. Program terms change often, so confirm current details with Octopus before you enroll.

Texas homeowners with a home battery can now earn bill credits by letting a retail electricity provider use part of that battery to help the grid during peak demand. Octopus Energy runs two of these virtual power plant (VPP) programs in Texas, and which one applies depends on the brand of battery you own.

Intelligent Octopus for Home Battery (Enphase owners)

This is Octopus’s program for Enphase IQ Battery owners. As published by Enphase:

  • A monthly bill credit equal to $4 per kWh of battery storage (about $20 a month for every 5 kWh).
  • Octopus won’t discharge your battery below 20% during a dispatch event, so some backup stays available.
  • You need an installed, interconnected, internet-connected Enphase IQ Battery system and an Octopus Energy electricity plan, which comes with a 12-month locked-in rate.
  • You can opt out at any time, but the monthly bill credit ends when you do.

Octo GridBoost (SolarEdge owners)

GridBoost is Octopus’s program for SolarEdge Home Battery owners: a $40 bill credit each billing cycle, plus exported energy credited at the real-time market price, which rises and falls with the market. Octopus describes it as part of ERCOT’s virtual power plant pilot.

The trade-offs to understand first

  • You switch providers. Both programs require an Octopus Energy electricity plan. Leaving your current plan early can mean an early-termination fee, and you may give up a solar buyback rate you like.
  • Octopus decides when to dispatch. During events, part of your stored energy goes to the grid instead of being held for your home, down to the program’s 20% floor.
  • More battery cycling. Extra dispatch means extra cycles. Check your battery warranty’s terms for VPP or third-party dispatch.
  • Credits aren’t guaranteed. They depend on staying enrolled and eligible, programs can change or end, and you generally can’t enroll the same battery in a second VPP.

Octopus isn’t the only option. TXU Energy, Gexa, Reliant, Tesla Electric and several utilities and co-ops run their own battery programs, each with different rules. Our Texas battery incentive programs page compares them, and our Octopus VPP guide includes an estimator.

Why This Matters for Texans

The Texas grid is under more pressure during peak hours than ever. Programs like these let home batteries help meet that demand without building new peaker plants, and they can add value to a battery you already own or are planning, depending on your provider, equipment and how much backup you want to keep.
