The Intelligent Octopus for Home Battery program lets Texas homeowners with a qualifying battery system earn monthly bill credits by making a portion of their stored energy available to the grid during peak demand. It is one of several residential virtual power plant (VPP) programs now operating on the ERCOT grid, and the one we see most often working well for customers with Enphase IQ batteries, provided the trade-offs fit how they plan to use their system.

What a VPP Is, and What You’re Actually Trading
A virtual power plant (VPP) aggregates distributed batteries and dispatches them collectively when the grid needs capacity, typically late afternoon into early evening during periods of high demand. In exchange for allowing the program operator to discharge a portion of your battery during those events, you receive compensation on your electric bill.
For Octopus’s Intelligent Octopus plan, the compensation is $20 per month for every 5 kWh of enrolled battery storage (equivalent to $4/kWh of storage per month), paid as a credit on your electricity bill as long as the battery remains connected and enrolled. For a 40 kWh system, that works out to approximately $160 per month, or roughly $1,920 per year in potential bill credits.

What Stays Protected
Octopus does not discharge your battery below a 20% state of charge during any dispatch event. That reserve is independent of any additional backup capacity you keep for your own purposes.
If the grid goes down, your system disconnects and runs in island mode as normal, with all of your stored energy and solar generation available to the house.
Eligibility
To participate in Intelligent Octopus for Home Battery, you need:
- A Texas address inside ERCOT competitive-retail territory (Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP Texas, TNMP, or LP&L)
- A qualifying battery: an Enphase IQ Battery system. The published program terms cover Enphase IQ batteries; SolarEdge Home Battery owners can look at Octopus’s separate Octo GridBoost program, and owners of other brands should confirm eligibility with Octopus before switching plans
- An internet-connected battery system (Wi-Fi or Ethernet)
- Enrollment on a qualifying Octopus Energy electricity plan
