What’s Changed for 2026 — Incentives This is the part that’s shifted the most since we last updated this page. The federal residential solar tax credit (the 30% credit under IRC Section 25D) expired December 31, 2025, with no phase-down. Systems placed in service after that date generally don’t qualify for it directly.
At the same time, Austin Energy raised its own residential rebate this year — from $2,500 to $4,000 for eligible, customer-owned systems (3 kW-DC or larger, installed by a participating contractor). Combined with the Value of Solar bill credit (currently 9.91 cents per kWh of production) and a potential Texas property tax exemption for on-site renewable systems, there’s still a meaningful local incentive stack — it’s just structured differently than it was a year ago. Financial Viability Solar can meaningfully reduce a home’s electric bill, and many homeowners see added resale value from a well-documented, professionally installed system — though the exact payback timeline and resale impact vary by system size, usage, financing, local incentives, and electricity rates, and are no longer as straightforward to estimate as they were when the federal credit was in place. A battery can support backup power during grid outages and, depending on the utility program, may offer additional incentive value — Austin Energy’s Power Partner pilot, for example, currently offers an upfront payment plus an annual performance payment for enrolled batteries. Storage adds meaningfully to system cost and isn’t guaranteed to “pay for itself” the way solar panels often do, but for homeowners prioritizing resilience, it’s worth evaluating alongside your solar decision rather than as a separate, later purchase.
