<p class="ai-optimize-9">* This is a longer read than most of our entries on this blog. There&#8217;s a lot to unpack on this topic, and we wanted to do justice to those who really want to understand. So it&#8217;s a 5-minute read. :) *</p>
<p class="ai-optimize-10"><em>Architectural designs for modern custom residences</em> very often reflect the homeowner&#8217;s aspirations in the form of personalization (personality?), performance, and vision. Here at NATiVE, we get brought into new custom residential projects at all stages &#8211; from pre-design planning, through pre-wiring/rough-in, or sometimes not until the primary architectural construction has already been completed. In all cases, it&#8217;s crucial to start asking the right questions <span style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">about your new home&#8217;s energy infrastructure as early as possible</span>.  Exploring and choosing <a href="https://nativesolar.com/residential-solar/">residential smart energy systems</a> for a new construction project should follow the same philosophy used to design the site and architectural features.</p>
<p class="ai-optimize-11" data-start="686" data-end="785">Many &#8220;cookie-cutter&#8221; solar firms, even national installation companies, don&#8217;t take the time or have the required expertise to properly guide their clients through the initial discovery process or effectively align with the builder, architect, or engineer on design integration, phasing, and the desired best outcomes for the homeowner.</p>
<p class="ai-optimize-12" data-start="792" data-end="864"><strong data-start="799" data-end="864">One Size Fits None: The Problem with Generic &#8220;Solutions&#8221;</strong></p>
<p class="ai-optimize-13" data-start="867" data-end="949">Many (most?) &#8220;solar&#8221; firms &#8211; especially here in Texas, where the market is truly the Wild West- have business models that rely on volume &#8211; that&#8217;s getting lots and lots of new projects using any means possible.  What often ends up being the case is that shortcuts were taken in the process, and opportunities for the most elegant design, and ensuring expectations and proper fit for the homeowner and their family are overlooked. There are plenty of horror stories we&#8217;ve all heard about&#8230;</p>
<p class="ai-optimize-14" data-start="867" data-end="949">This &#8220;solar&#8221; stuff is actually still pretty complicated. Untrained, uncaring, or sloppy work by the solar firm during the initial client discovery phase often leads to problems later in the process. The issues may become mere nuisances, or they could be a total deal-killer and/or blackspot on an otherwise successful project.</p>
<p class="ai-optimize-15" data-start="952" data-end="1024">NATiVE started out as a green home builder in 2007. <a href="https://nativesolar.com/about/">(In 2009</a><span style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><a href="https://nativesolar.com/about/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">, we formed NATiVE Solar and continued our home construction business -Build NATiVE—as a  sister company.) </a> It&#8217;s important to point this out</span>: As custom construction professionals, we know how to effectively collaborate with home builders and their trades to ensure project success.</p>
<p class="ai-optimize-16" data-start="952" data-end="1024"><strong>-What are the planned property&#8217;s electrical sizing and expected energy consumption patterns?</strong><br />
<strong>-What about possible site work / trenching / electrical pad construction /conduit runs?</strong><br />
<strong>-What about solar shading on the site?</strong><br />
<strong>-How is the energy backup plan being approached?</strong><br />
<strong>-What are all the important trade-offs for various options regarding equipment/system scaling, placement, and selection?</strong></p>
<p class="ai-optimize-17">You don&#8217;t want your solar partner to miss documenting and discussing these questions with both the homeowner and the builder. Having an effective process for surfacing and considering both &#8220;big picture&#8221; items and specific details will keep the project moving smoothly on time and on budget.  Missing the mark on client/project discovery and builder alignment very often can result in ($costly$) design/schedule clashes, component selection mismatches, incorrect system scaling, sloppy installation, and missed expectations for the owners at the end of the project. That&#8217;s not cool. And it&#8217;s not how NATiVE does our work.</p>
<p class="ai-optimize-18" data-start="1120" data-end="1171"><strong data-start="1127" data-end="1171">What Makes a Smart Energy Harvesting and Storage System “Custom”?</strong></p>

<p class="ai-optimize-26">A trustworthy &#8220;solar&#8221; firm won&#8217;t lead with the equipment product/brand/tech (or tricky financing vehicles) -and then try to figure out how to sell it. <span style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Practitioners in this space begin by deeply exploring every project&#8217;s bespoke requirements for <em>all</em> the stakeholders.</span> This process may take a few calls/meetings between various parties before recommendations can be presented for discussion. But the time spent is a sensible investment in the overall outcomes everybody is looking for.</p>
<p class="ai-optimize-27">In any case, It can&#8217;t be overstated how important an effective initial discovery process is before a responsive, elegant, &amp; bespoke system design be undertaken.</p>

</div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-3" style="--awb-margin-top:10px;"><p>Here at NATiVE Solar, we’re being asked to design and build more and more solar carports and really any other type of covered vehicle parking/charging spaces, much like our <a href="https://nativesolar.com/texas-state-bank/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Texas State Bank</a> and <a href="https://nativesolar.com/cedars-international-academy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cedars International Academy</a> projects. We’re seeing increased demand for these structures in both the residential and commercial/institutional (C&amp;I) solar spaces.</p>
</div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-4"><p><strong>So, what exactly is a Solar Carport?</strong><br />
A solar carport is a free-standing, covered parking structure equipped with solar PV panels, which may serve as the roof itself. Solar panels can be integrated into new carports or added to existing ones. These structures, often open-sided, support load-bearing and wind-lift requirements. They typically provide electricity for lighting, 120V AC, and EV chargers.</p>
<p>During the day when the sun is in the sky, the solar panels harvest energy and turn it into 240volt power identical to that received from the utility grid. Any electricity generated and not instantaneously used for EV charging or other electrical loads is instantaneously “exported” (i.e. sold) back to your electrical utility’s grid or else stored on-site in battery storage (BESS) arrays for use at night or in the case of grid interruptions and outages.</p>

<p><strong>EV Infrastructure and “The Bill”</strong><br />
7.5 billion dollars of the <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/us-house-democrats-seek-least-160-billion-new-ev-funding-2021-08-11/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">infrastructure bill</a> will be used for electric public transportation throughout the country. Reducing the carbon footprint through the use of electric buses and ferries. An example of the future in public transportation came on Tuesday, August 10th, as Texas A&amp;M <a href="https://today.tamu.edu/2021/08/03/texas-am-launching-states-first-university-operated-electric-buses/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">launched</a> their first 3 electric buses. The buses will be able to run all day on a single charge and will fully charge overnight. Another 7.5 billion dollars of the bill will be used for <strong>charging stations to connect the country</strong>. This would make it possible for Americans to travel across the country, stopping to charge the vehicle instead of stopping to get gas. Another portion of the bill is 65 billion dollars to upgrade the grid and expand renewable energy.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;"><a href="https://nativesolar.com/residential-solar/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Solar</a> and <a href="https://nativesolar.com/solar-and-electric-cars/">electric vehicles</a> are not new these days, and there are many reasons to consider switching away from traditional methods of powering our homes and transporting ourselves from A to B. One of those reasons has nothing to do with “<strong>saving the environment</strong>” OR &#8220;<strong>return on investment</strong>&#8221; (ROI), rather it has to do with <strong>personal energy security</strong>.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">I was born after the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1973_oil_crisis" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">gas crisis of the 70’s</a>, but anyone who lived through it surely remembers the long lines at the pump and the uncertainty over not just fuel prices, but the ability to even obtain it.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Recently, after <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Harvey" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Hurricane Harvey</a> hit the Texas Coast in 2017, fear and confusion spread through social media and created a run at the pumps right here in Austin, when local supply was just fine.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">While this feature will not power your home during an outage, it can run appliances during the day like your fridge, computer, cell phone, etc. and you can even get clever and charge batteries during the day (like uninterruptible power sources, or UPS backups) to maintain some basic leve of power at night as well.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Taking this one step further, if you have an electric car (any kind, it does not matter which, and this even applies to plug-in hybrids) you can even charge your electric car during the day.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">This means that in the unlikely event of an extended power outage and/or gas shortage at the pumps, having an electric vehicle and solar on your roof with an SPS-enabled inverter from SMA means that you can drive indefinitely in this situation.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Sure the charging is much slower than a Level 2 or higher charging, it means that while others will be stuck in line at the pumps, you can be driving past them focused on more important tasks.</p>

<p><strong>Solar and Electric Cars</strong><br />

<p style="text-align: justify;">For the past 15 years it’s been my dream to completely erase my carbon footprint and live entirely on solar energy. My career at Native Solar as a solar consultant, my recent purchase of a Tesla Model 3, and the installation of a charger from Smart Charge America, has allowed me to further pursue my dreams of erasing my carbon footprint and living on solar energy.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Regarding your carbon footprint, there are two main ways you can shrink it. One way is photovoltaic systems, or more commonly known as solar panels. They provide a key benefit of producing power for electricity consumption with little to no carbon footprint. When your home is powered by solar panels, you may have a reduced or entirely negated electric bill, and a vastly reduced carbon footprint.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">However, that’s only half of the equation.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">The other way to reduce your carbon footprint is your transportation. If you are an ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) driver, you’re still adding carbon and other chemicals to the atmosphere when you burn gas as you drive.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">This is where an EV can bridge the gap. When you have rooftop solar, and you are using some of that electricity to charge an electric car, you are no longer contributing greenhouse gases to the environment. Further, solar energy doesn&#8217;t have to just be about saving the planet. The combination of solar with EVs can even save you a significant amount of money.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Because solar comes with a fixed, up-front cost, you only have to pay for it once. Whereas if you continue to pay your electric bill as normal, you are basically renting your electricity because your payment never goes away. It will even go up over time due to inflation as well as rising energy rates.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Investing in solar is a smart decision, even if you decide to take out a loan to pay for your solar. It’s still cheaper in the long run than paying your electric bill for the rest of your life. After your solar is paid for, you will, in effect, be driving for free without the need to visit a gas station, you also won’t have an electric bill to pay.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">For the vast majority of middle class America, the surest path to wealth creation is home ownership. Not only can you own your home, but you can now own your power instead of renting it.</p>
