<p data-start="468" data-end="875"><strong>Even as some lawmakers push bills that could slow solar (and other renewable energy) adoption growth, the Lone Star State is quietly turning into a hub for solar manufacturing.</strong>  From massive PV (solar phovoltaic ) module factories to next-gen battery and microinverter manufacturing, Texas seems to be proving that market demand and smart investments can thrive even when the political winds don’t exactly blow in solar’s favor.</p>
<p data-start="877" data-end="1131">For NATiVE solar  -and really,  anyone in the &#8220;solar&#8221; space here in Texas, this boom isn’t just interesting. <strong>This is more great evidence that <a href="https://seia.org/news/domestic-solar-manufacturing-booms-during-trump-administration-with-entire-solar-supply-chain-reshored/">the market fundamentals behind the shift to renewable energy remain strong</a></strong>.  It means big players in the space are continuing to make bets and invest massively in domestic &#8220;greentech&#8221; manufacturing capacity.  Shorter and more plentiful supply chains, lower costs, and regional vendor support means more efficient projects and happier solar/smart energy storage customers.</p>

But if I’m being honest, when many folks hear the phrase “battery chemistry,” followed by a bunch of rare earth elements, exotic materials, and complex-sounding manufacturing technologies, their eyes glaze over. But in 2025, <strong>battery storage technology</strong> is evolving fast — and it matters more than ever for solar, EVs, and home energy systems.</p>
<article>And here’s more truth: <strong>chemistry is the heart of energy storage. </strong>Chemistry determines how much power you can store in a given space (aka &#8220;energy density&#8221;,). how fast you can use it, how long it lasts, how safe it is, and how much it costs.It&#8217;s a really deep topic but we&#8217;re gonna keep it high-level here.  If energy storage is interesting to you, this quick briefing will inform and understand -and may help you make better decisions on the topic.</p>
<h2></h2>
<h2>The Mission: Everything All At Once</h2>
<p><strong>All battery storage technology in 2025 — from household systems to grid-scale arrays — has to make tradeoffs between safety, lifespan, density, and cost. </strong>Materials scientists and engineers are chasing several big targets:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>More energy density</strong> (store more power in less space)</li>
<li><strong>Faster charging and discharging</strong></li>
<li><strong>Longer lifespan</strong> (more cycles = more value over time)</li>
<li><strong>Greater safety and thermal stability </strong>(cold and hot extremes can degrade performance)</li>
<li><strong>Greener Mining, Manufacturing and Recyclability</strong></li>
</ul>
<p>Oh, and make it <strong>cheaper</strong>.</p>
<p>No known battery design can optimize for all of these things simultaneously, but scientists and engineers are making huge strides on every front.</p>

<h2>Battery Storage Technology 2025: Lithium-Ion and Its Many Flavors</h2>
<p>Right now,<a href="https://nativesolar.com/texas-battery-energy-storage/"> <strong>lithium-ion is the dominant battery type</strong>.</a> It powers your phone, your tools, your EV, and your Powerwall.</p>
<p>But “lithium-ion” covers a <strong>range of chemistries</strong>, each with its own pros and cons:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>NMC (Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt)</strong><br />
High energy density and common in EVs -but expensive and reliant on cobalt (which is a geopolitical and ethical headache).</li>
<li><strong>LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) (a.k.a LiFePO4)</strong><br />
A workhorse for solar-electrical energy storage. It’s more stable, non-toxic, less prone to fire, and lasts longer -especially in heat. It’s the state-of-the-art standard for residential and commercial solar batteries right now.</li>
<li><strong>LMR (Lithium Manganese Rich)</strong><br />
An up-and-comer. Less nickel and cobalt, more manganese (which is abundant and cheap). Promises long cycle life and solid performance. GM and LG are planning mass production by 2028.</li>
</ul>
<p>(There are other tradeoffs, but this is the big stuff you&#8217;d want to understand&#8230;)</p>
<h2></h2>
<h2>Beyond Lithium: Salt, Zinc, Iron &amp; Friends</h2>
<p>As demand for batteries grows, so does the push for <strong>alternatives to lithium</strong>. Some are already here, others are still cooking in the lab.</p>
<p><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium-ion_battery#:~:text=Among%20its%20standout%20features%20are,100%20and%20170%20Wh%2FKg."><strong>Sodium-Ion</strong></a> is leading the charge:</p>
<ul>
<li>Uses abundant materials (think salt, not lithium).</li>
<li>Performs well in cold climates.</li>
<li>Energy density is catching up to LFP.</li>
<li>CATL, Natron, and others are already rolling out sodium-ion for grid and commercial storage. Mass production is in progress and prices, while at a premium today, are expected to fall quickly as production scales up starting now.</li>
</ul>
<p>Other promising non-lithium options include:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Zinc-Air &amp; Iron-Air</strong>: Developed for <em>long-duration storage</em> (think 100+ hours). Great for the grid. Less so for your garage -at least for now.</li>
<li><strong>Aluminum-Ion</strong>: Early-stage, but attractive for being lightweight, fast-charging, and potentially easier to recycle.</li>
</ul>
<p>These aren’t mainstream yet -but they’re important for <strong>reducing dependency on global lithium markets</strong>, <strong>lowering cost</strong>, and <strong>enabling big, distributed energy systems</strong>.</p>
<h2></h2>
<h2>Solid-State Batteries and the Future of Battery Storage Technology</h2>
<p><strong>Suppose lithium-ion is the reliable old pickup truck. In that case, solid-state batteries</strong> are the sleek electric hypercar everyone’s trying to build—but nobody’s quite figured out how to mass-produce (yet) at the scale (cost) required for broad industry acceptance.</p>
<p>Instead of a flammable liquid electrolyte, solid-state designs use—you guessed it -a <strong>solid material</strong> to move ions (a.k.a. electricity!) around. That unlocks some big perks:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Safer</strong> (no liquid = no fire risk)</li>
<li><strong>Smaller and more compact</strong></li>
<li><strong>Potentially faster charging</strong></li>
<li><strong>Higher energy density</strong></li>
</ul>
<h2>Common Solid Electrolyte Materials:</h2>
<ul>
<li><strong>Sulfides</strong> – High conductivity, but tricky to manufacture and can release hydrogen sulfide gas.</li>
<li><strong>Oxides (e.g. LLZO: Lithium Lanthanum Zirconium Oxide)</strong> – Chemically stable but brittle and hard to scale.</li>
<li><strong>Polymers</strong> – Flexible and easy to shape, but lower conductivity and usually require heat to work efficiently.</li>
<li><strong>Composite materials</strong> – Hybrid designs combining polymers and ceramics are showing promise.</li>
</ul>
<h2>Where Are We Now?</h2>
<p><a href="https://www.quantumscape.com/"><strong>QuantumScape</strong></a> (backed by VW) has early prototypes using lithium-metal anodes and ceramic electrolytes.</p>
<p><a href="https://ionstoragesystems.com/"><strong>Ion Storage Systems</strong> and <strong>Toyota</strong></a> are also making real-world progress, with pilot lines and defense contracts underway.</p>
<p>While solid-state is the most hyped <strong>battery storage technology of 2025</strong>, it&#8217;s still a few years away from changing the solar storage game at home.</p>

<h2>Sunnova’s Residential Solar Exit: What It Means—and Why NATiVE Isn’t Going Anywhere</h2>
<p>The <strong>Sunnova residential solar exit</strong> just shook the Texas market. Sunnova, one of the biggest names in residential solar, announced it’s shutting down its residential division&#8230; For years, Sunnova pushed into the Texas market with “zero-down” throw out and godzilla-scale marketing schemes &#8211; any they installed a lot of residential solar Texas. Now they’re walking away from residential solar and trying to figure out a new brand &amp; business model. It won&#8217;t look the same as it did &#8211;and it may be too late for them.</p>
<p><em>If you’re a homeowner (or a custom home builder) following the contours of the solar market and trying to understand how changes and new effect the Texas solar industry, here’s the truth:  </em><strong>Not all solar companies are built the same. <em>And NATiVE isn’t going anywhere</em>.  </strong>But first&#8230;</p>
<h3>What Went Wrong with Sunnova?</h3>
<p>The <strong>Sunnova residential solar exit</strong> didn’t come out of nowhere—it followed years of aggressive expansion built on shaky financial ground.</p>
<p>Sunnova didn’t build solar systems—they built <strong>financial products</strong>. They leased solar systems to homeowners <em><strong>but contracted with 3rd-party installers to do the design &amp; installation work -and system maintenance. </strong></em></p>
<p>They, like other similar large solar companies which have collapsed in the last fea years, had to purchase all the equipment, services and labor up front so they could give the homeowner customer the system for a $zero-down$, 25 year lease. It sounded like a good option to some customers -and these solar business grew.  But they had to leverage <em>their own credit</em> facilities to do that. Following the money was cheap was a profitable business model -up to about 2023.</p>
<p><strong>When consumer and business loan interest rates skyrocketed<a href="https://www.google.com/search?sca_esv=45c8bf4228d081b3&amp;rlz=1C1RXQR_enUS1107US1107&amp;q=bankruptcy+residential+solar+leasing+lease+interest+rates&amp;tbm=nws&amp;source=lnms&amp;fbs=AIIjpHxU7SXXniUZfeShr2fp4giZPH5QghoXViUOqdFyhkUfHhA90f6RZnLvcDKUWyhDavFJHvqNnhR_vnElk0C8uWstJqJMrK02Urg9ktNjt07MgH5SGgR03JQzRIbbjYl_pRmWIDs0SBPL2z49RYuksIS49PBd2-L6lU7KGAnro0KEcoCo2ts7P7S5X1MrNZy-MDlvMROi4bwPRwzOxlXqVc6oTNypaw&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwi1v575yeyNAxU848kDHaskCowQ0pQJegQIFhAB&amp;biw=1707&amp;bih=772&amp;dpr=1.13"> by mid-&#8217;23, these solar firms suddenly became financially &#8220;underwater&#8221;</a></strong> on a huge part of their installed customer portfolio. Then, having to raise the rates on the leasing terms for new customers made this option much less desirable for homeowners.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s a bit more to it, but<strong> these are the main points to take away :</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Most customers <strong>didn’t own their solar/energy storage systems</strong></li>
<li>Locked into <strong>20–25 year lease or &#8220;PPA&#8221; contracts</strong></li>
<li>Installations/service were handled by <strong>third-party solar contractors</strong></li>
<li>Model dependent on <strong>high debt and low interest rates</strong></li>
</ul>
<p>When interest rates rose, their economics and business model unraveled. <strong>Now they’re exiting residential solar entirely.  </strong>It’s a cautionary tale for anyone considering residential solar in Texas: Know who you’re partnering with, and understand the difference between leasing a system and owning one outright.</p>

Tragedies of this magnitude give rise to a wave of generosity and a collaboration that embraces the best of the human spirit. NATiVE is honored and proud to be part of a <a href="https://nativesolar.com/amicus-solar/">group of solar companies</a> collaborating with a global disaster relief agency that is bringing Portable <strong>Emergency Solar Power to Puerto Rico</strong>.</p>

The design is a 3kw system built onto a trailer with a fold out array and 15 lockers with outlets in them. All the solar PV equipment is locked inside. The trailers can run fully off grid, or be plugged into the grid once it&#8217;s restored.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The first three are being built in Massachusetts and shipped down. The future plan is to be able to build them down there based on the first ones thru Amurtel, our Puerto Rico Amicus partner.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">In response to the ongoing humanitarian disaster in Puerto Rico, a group of U.S. solar companies and a global disaster relief agency are mobilizing to bring portable emergency power trailers to remote areas of the unincorporated U.S. territory.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Roughly 40% of Puerto Rico is still without power and clean drinking water after the catastrophic Hurricane Maria tore across the island in September. Hundreds of thousands of island residents are risking serious illness daily as they are forced to collect water from streams and other untreated water sources that are known to be contaminated. Without access to power to charge cell phones or computers and roads destroyed or blocked by fallen trees, many island residents are isolated and unable to get information on aid opportunities.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Amurtel, a non-profit disaster relief agency, and Amicus, a purchasing cooperative of about 50 American solar companies, have created a partnership to bring emergency solar power and drinking water systems to those struggling to recover from the hurricane. The effort, called Power On Puerto Rico, is enlisting volunteers from Amicus member-companies to design and build Solar Outreach Systems (SOS) that will be delivered to the areas of greatest need identified by Amurtel staff on the ground in Puerto Rico.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Located close to the equator where solar energy is most abundant, Puerto Rico is an ideal geography for harnessing solar energy. The Solar Outreach Systems, which are portable community-based communication, water purification and emergency power hubs, will immediately assist on-the-ground relief efforts.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The SOS units will be deployed by the Aireko Foundation, an offshoot of Aireko Energy Solutions, which is a Puerto Rico-based member of Amicus. These units will be loaned to the communities for the duration of their need and then be redeployed to other disaster areas around the globe as needs and events dictate.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;">“The aftermath of Hurricane Maria has been as difficult and often even harder than surviving the storm itself, especially for those communities in the interior of the island. After more than two months, reestablishment of electric power for those communities is still unknown, and the quality of water is not the best &#8211; for those communities that are lucky enough to have this service, which are very few. Sadly, those communities are far from returning to their normal lives,” said Hector Rivera Russe of Aireko Energy Solutions. “I’m deeply touched by how my Amicus partners, alongside Amurtel, have jumped without hesitation, to putting their time, resources and effort to give relief to my people in Puerto Rico. I will always be thankful to them,” said Russe.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The first three SOS units are being manufactured in the North Andover, MA warehouse of ReVision Energy, a founding member of Amicus recently named the #1 Rooftop Solar Installer in New England by Solar Power Industry magazine. “We are chomping at the bit to build these portable emergency power units,” said Phil Coupe, a co-founder of ReVision Energy. “The great news is that we already have more than enough volunteers to build the units once we obtain all the necessary components.”</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Each SOS is comprised of an enclosed trailer with exterior solar panels and power outlets, along with batteries and a water purification system inside the trailer. Once parked in a sunny location, the exterior solar panels are deployed and switched on to provide 300-400 watts of emergency power while simultaneously purifying up to 600 gallons of clean potable water a day. Each SOS unit can charge up to 10 phones and five laptops simultaneously. Two large outdoor floodlights affixed to the roof of the SOS units will enable community members to have light at night.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The first 10 Puerto Rican communities that will receive SOS’s have already been identified, and are anxiously awaiting their units. Each community will be responsible for the maintenance and security of their unit, but there will be no cost associated with the use.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Power On Puerto Rico is a powerful way that individuals can help fellow Americans in crisis. Although all of the SOS design work, and many of the components, have been donated, Amurtel and Amicus need additional funds to finish manufacturing the SOS units and to deliver them. The estimated cost of each SOS unit is $15,000 to purchase the trailer base, water purification system, charging outlets, lights and batteries.</p>

They installed a 9-kilowatt (kW) system to their 1970s ranch, and since moving in, in January 2015, their electric bills have been next to nothing. Jay says that through April 15 their bill for 2016 has been $102 total. &#8220;A lot of our neighbors are pay­ing $300 to $400 a month,&#8221; he says. While much of the savings can be attributed to the other renovations, Jay estimates the family&#8217;s electric bill would be four times more expensive without solar. Solar was right for the Forrests, but is it right for you? Local experts provide five factors to consider before answering that question. Austin Energy recommends that a roof have at least 10 years of life remaining in it before the addition of solar panels. &#8220;If you have three years left on your roof or if you have a bunch of hail damage and that roof has to come off in a couple years, you should really think about getting a new roof first,&#8221; Dixon says. &#8220;You want to have a roof that has some life left in it so you don&#8217;t have to take it down in two years and have to put it back up.&#8221;</span></p>
